Throughout World War II, in the conflict fought against Japan, Navajo code talkers were a crucial part of the U.S. effort, sending messages back and forth in an unbreakable code that used their native language. They braved some of the heaviest fighting of the war, and with their code, they saved countless American lives. Yet their story remained classified for more than twenty years.
But now Joseph Bruchac brings their stories to life for young adults through the riveting fictional tale of Ned Begay, a sixteen-year-old Navajo boy who becomes a code talker. His grueling journey is eye-opening and inspiring. This deeply affecting novel honors all of those young men, like Ned, who dared to serve, and it honors the culture and language of the Navajo Indians.
An ALA Best Book for Young Adults

Great book, very slow beginning, but stick with it I got this for my 10 year old for a 5th grade historical fiction book report. I warned him that the beginning was supposed to be extremely slow to get through, but that then the book turns out to be awesome! Sure enough, he was complaining and whining about how boring the book was, but I made him stick with it and woohoo, paydirt, he then couldn't put it down! He thought it was great! !!!Code Talkers One of the most interesting facets of World War II in my opinion. This is an amazing true story. Never will there be enough praise for the code talkers. They were instrumental in saving the free world. This is a fantastic book that every American citizen should be required to read. I am in awe of these American heroes.engaging story Needed a fiction story for a high school freshman who dislikes reading. This book kept my student's interest thanks to the easy to read prose and the mix of historical accuracy and fictional characters. If you weren't familiar with the WW2 Navajo Code Talkers, this is a great introduction to their fascinating story.
